Would It Be Possible to Increase the Reading and Writing Ranges of an RFID Reader Using an Amplifier?

I have heard of active RFID systems using repeaters to capture signals from a tag and then forwarding that data to a reader located far away. This is usually done when there is a very large area to cover, such as a container yard. It might be theoretically possible to do something similar with passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) RFID, but I am unaware of any products on the market that are designed to do this.

In general, passive RFID systems tell you that a tagged item is in a particular area because the reader antennas cover only that area. Widening the area would have a potential negative effect, in that you would be broadening the tagged item's location. This might be the reason that no such products (at least to my knowledge) are currently on the market.

I should point out that Mojix offers a passive UHF real-time location system that sends and receives signals so that exciters close to a tag can power up that tag, enabling a reader located more than 600 feet away to read it. This system might work for your needs.
