Can I Track Cattle Using RFID and GPS?
Would a combination of these two technologies help me manage my animals?
Yes, but I am not convinced this would be the best solution. You would essentially be investing in two technologies, which would be costly.
Most ranchers tag their animals with RFID ear tags and then use them to monitor whether the animals are in a field, barn or feed station. RFID is a short-range technology, so you wouldn't know the precise location of an individual cow. But if you placed readers at the entry points to the field and barn, then you would know that an animal had passed that point and was in the barn or field.
If your field is extremely large and you need to locate a specific animal within it, then you would need to buy a separate GPS device for each animal. These devices are expensive and require batteries, so they would need to be recharged on a regular basis. As such, I would try to avoid using GPS if at all possible.
