How Can I Read a Tag Inside a Refrigerator from the Outside?

Posted By RFID Journal, 03.11.2016

Is this even possible?

This would not be possible, I'm afraid. A refrigerator is composed of metal, and radio waves bounce off metal. It would be feasible, however, to place a reader within a fridge and have it wired to a Wi-Fi transmitter on the outside, so that it could send data about what is inside via a network.

This can usually be achieved using active RFID, albeit at relatively short range (up to 10metres). The 'small gap' provided by the rubber seal around refrigerator doors is sufficient for radio waves to penetrate. Such solutions include temperature monitoring etc. Regards Ralph Jarmain, SecuriCode Ltd (http://www.securicode.co.uk)

Hi Keip, this is possible. The Sonitor Sense™ SmartTag Sensor Tag series supports temperature monitoring over a wide range of applications. It's available with either an internal or an external temperature sensor. The SmartTag with internal sensor is used for monitoring ambient temperature, e.g. in rooms where it is important that the temperature is kept stable. The tags with external sensor is typically used for monitoring temperature in refrigerators/freezers and cold storage areas. They can be configured to report temperature measurements at regular intervals, allowing you to "read" the tag inside a refrigerator from the outside. Hope this helps.

To read all items inside the fridge with RFID without missing, is one antenna at bottom/ top is good enough or more number of small gain antenna are needed. MK Dani
