What Are the Latest RFID Developments in Electronic Toll-Collection Applications?
Is the trend focusing more on passive or active technologies, or an integration of both?
There are two trends in electronic toll collection. Active systems are moving toward high-speed data collection, in which tags can be read without cars having to slow down to five or even 20 miles per hour. In fact, tags and readers have improved to the point at which data can now be captured 100 percent of the time with vehicles traveling at 60 miles per hour.
The other trend is the adoption of passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) RFID for toll collection. Only a few transportation authorities have gone this route to date, but there is a group called 6C Toll Operators Committee that is trying to promote the use of passive UHF RFID in the United States (see Efforts to Aid Adoption of ISO 18000-6C RFID for Toll Collection Move Forward). Passive RFID has the benefit of less-expensive transponders, but it remains to be seen whether passive systems will catch on in a significant way.
