Can RFID and ERP Systems Be Combined?
Our company has an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, and we use bar codes for identification and process control. If we replace it with an RFID system, can I connect an RFID reader to a computer's USB port? And will the reader output will compatible with our ERP input?
No. It's unlikely that the reader output would be in a format that your ERP system could use. Generally, companies connect readers to an edge server via a wired or wireless network. The edge server runs middleware, filters the RFID data and converts it into a format that can be used by the ERP system. You might need to write an application programming interface (API) that links the middleware to the ERP system, though many middleware providers have a library of APIs to popular ERP programs.
