Would RFID Be Good for Tracking Office Equipment?
Does it make sense to use a reader and chips to locate equipment, such as cables, adapters and special pieces of hardware, within a large office?
I would say it is probably not worth tagging cables, adapters or other low-value pieces of equipment, as the cost of an RFID system would likely outweigh the benefits achieved. It might make sense, however, to tag these items as part of a larger solution that also monitors computers, peripherals and higher-value items.
I believe companies will one day track all of these types of objects, but until RFID becomes ubiquitous, I think you should consider whether or not there is a business problem that needs to be addressed. If you are spending a lot of time taking inventory counts of office equipment, RFID might make a lot of sense. And if items are being stolen, RFID might help reduce the incidence of theft. But tagging a cable so that you can locate one when you need it is probably not a worthwhile use of RFID right now. Buying a few extra cables and keeping them on hand would probably be a better and cheaper solution.
