What Type of Battery Is Typically Used in an Active RFID Tag?
Would lithium-thionyl chloride batteries be a good choice? And are they rechargeable?
It depends on who manufacturers the active RFID transponder, and on the application involved. Many companies use lithium-ion batteries. Xeno Energy offers lithium-thionyl chloride batteries for active tags. These cells offer high energy density and a long shelf life, and can withstand somewhat more extreme temperatures than lithium-ion batteries can. They are not rechargeable, but in most cases, companies do not recharge batteries in active tags anyway—they replace the tags. So, yes, lithium-thionyl chloride batteries would be a good choice for active tags.
