Can RFID Be Applied to Jewelry?

Posted By RFID Journal, 03.17.2014

Is this a viable application for the technology—and is anyone doing it?

Absolutely. Last year, we wrote about Borsheims, a Berkshire Hathaway-owned retailer, using RFID to conduct daily inventory counts. The retailer operates a single location in Nebraska that measures 62,000 square feet and carries 88,000 pieces of fine jewelry and other goods, ranging up to $1 million in value. Inventorying these goods with bar codes requires that employees pick up each item, orient a small bar code toward a scanner and then scan it, which is time-consuming and error-prone. In 2012, Borsheims installed an RFID solution from TJS, known as ZeroShrink. The system has reduced the amount of time required for inventory counts, decreased shrinkage levels and provided better control over store inventory (see RFID Eliminates Shrinkage at Borsheims' Jewelry Store).

Several RFID tag vendors that offer tags specially designed for jewelry, including Avery Dennison and Data2 Corp., will be exhibiting at our RFID Journal LIVE! conference and exhibition, which will be held on Apr. 8-10, 2014, in Orlando, Fla. Below are some additional articles about using RFID to track jewelry, which I hope you will find useful.
