What Types of RFID Tags Are Compatible With Metal Bakeware?

Are there any tags designed to be applied to metallic objects?

There are many types of tags built for application to metal objects. However, there is an issue to consider when it comes to tagging bakeware, which is heat. RFID transponders have chips that are soldered to an antenna. Most solder melts at around 370 degrees Fahrenheit (188 degrees Celsius), so if you plan to tag bakeware that will be heated to higher temperatures, you will need to use on-metal tags that employ special solder to protect the chip.

The most heat-resistant RFID tags currently on the market are Technologies ROI's rectangular WoW-1 tag (which measures 1.5 inches by 1 inch by 0.5 inch), circular WoW-2 tag (measuring 1.35 inches by 3 inches) and Armored-RFID tag (which measures 1.25 inches by 0.5 inch). These ruggedized tags are embedded in a stainless-steel case, and feature a ceramic layer that can sustain temperatures ranging from 500 degrees to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (260 degrees to 538 degrees Celsius). They can be interrogated from six different directions, through the metal, thanks to their special antenna design (see Behold the Weldable Metal Tag! and Armored-RFID Tag Loves to Get Hammered).

Metalcraft, Omni-ID, William Frick and Co. and Xerafy are among the leading providers of on-metal tags. These firms will be exhibiting at this year's RFID Journal LIVE! conference and exhibition, being held on Apr. 8-10, in Orlando, Fla.
