Can a Reader's Power Consumption Be Reduced?

We use Motorola FX7400 readers running on solar power, and would like to decrease the devices' power consumption. Is this possible?

To answer your question, I reached out to Susan Flake, Motorola Solutions' director of RFID business development, who has been involved with many deployments and is, of course, very knowledgeable about Motorola's products. This is her response:

"It is possible to optimize hardware and software design to reduce the reader power consumption if the application can typically work at lower RF power levels or lower duty cycles. It may be possible with the FX7400 reader, and others on the market, to customize and reduce power based on more details of the intended application's RF requirements, available solar power and so on. However, typically such changes warrant custom-designed hardware and software to meet the goals of an intended application."
