What Is the Correct Tag to Use for a Jewelry Retail Business?

In the jewelry industry, the financial benefits of implementing RFID are quite clear. Gem dealers and jewelry-store retailers must manually track thousands of small, high-value items daily, which is a time-consuming and error-prone process. RFID providers have developed complete solutions—with tags, readers and software designed for monitoring gems and jewelry—that automate the process, thereby reducing the amount of time required to perform inventory counts, while eliminating shrinkage and freeing up salespeople to help customers (see A Gem of a Solution).
Most jewelers are employing passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) or high-frequency (HF) tags. Borsheims is utilizing a solution from TJS that uses passive HF transponders (see RFID Eliminates Shrinkage at Borsheims' Jewelry Store).
And Sissy's Log Cabin, a jewelry retailer located in Arkansas, has been using a passive UHF RFID solution for the past six years at its stores in Pine Bluff and Little Rock, to more accurately and quickly inventory the trays of watches, gems and fine jewelry that it displays and sells (see Arkansas Jeweler Cuts Inventory Time By 75 Percent With RFID).
