What Is the Cost of an RFID System?
How much can our company expect to spend if we implement a radio frequency identification solution?
This is a question I am often asked, but there is simply no way to answer it. A radio frequency identification solution could cost as little as $799 or as much as millions of dollars. It all depends on whether you want to track a few items using a smartphone reader and software (see RFID Journal's Find-IT), or billions of unique items across your entire enterprise. It's a bit like asking how much a computer system costs—that would depend on many factors, such as the number of users. I know that sounds evasive and unhelpful, but there is no point in putting out a number that would prove meaningless. I could perhaps offer ballpark figures if I knew what your company wanted to track, how many items it has on hand, the number of doorways or dock doors it needs to cover and so forth. But it would be impossible to estimate costs without some specifics.
