What Tag and Reader Can Be Integrated Into a Door Lock System?

Posted By RFID Journal, 06.03.2013

Where can I find tags that can be deactivated within a certain period of time, such as 30 days?

One of the first applications of radio frequency identification was for access control. Readers are integrated with door locks, and staff members are given badges with an embedded high-frequency (HF) RFID transponder. When the badge is waved close to the reader, the door unlocks. These systems, manufactured by such companies as Assa Abloy and Secura Key, typically have software for managing permissions associated with each badge. One person might be allowed into the building, but not into a secure warehouse or data center.

To answer your question, I reached out to Secura Key. Bob Holland, the company's marketing manager, says, "[There is] no way to deactivate the actual RFID card for 30 days, but it is easy to deactivate the card's access privileges in the database." In other words, you could take away access privileges for 30 days in the software, and then restore them when you saw fit. The card could still be read, but when the card's ID number was sent to the database, the system would indicate that it should not be allowed to open the door until access privileges were restored.
