What Are the Leading RFID Companies?

Which firms are considered at the top of the field?

I guess it depends on what you mean by "leading." I assume you mean largest by sales volume, as opposed to, say, those leading the market by introducing innovative new products. In some cases, they are the same, but not always.

The largest manufacturer of Gen 2-compliant ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) RFID readers is Motorola. But there are others, such as Alien Technology, Applied Wireless RFID, CAEN RFID, GAO RFID, Impinj, Mojix and ThingMagic.

If you are looking at UHF chips, the leaders are Alien, Impinj and NXP Semiconductors. If you are looking at UHF inlays, the leaders include Avery Dennison, Invengo and Smartrac Technology.

I could also list leaders in high-frequency (HF), Near Field Communication (NFC), active RFID and other technologies. But my guess is that you ask because you are an individual investor and are interested in purchasing stock in a fast-growing RFID company. The problem is that most RFID firms are not publicly traded, and those that are have other businesses besides radio frequency identification that make up the lion's share of their revenue. As such, it is not easy to invest in pure-play RFID businesses.

I would like to point out that Alien Technology is one of the largest worldwide providers of UHF Passive RFID Inlays. http://www.alientechnology.com/tags/ Alien does chips, tags/inlays, readers (fixed/mobile) and RFID services including the well regarded Alien Academy (more info here):http://www.alientechnology.com/services/academy/ Finally, Alien Technology is also hosting a worldwide User Conference in September: http://www.alientechnology.com/services/userconf/

Not sure how Honeywell (ex. Intermec) was left off of this list, given that we are one of the top handheld RFID suppliers and probably sell more fixed reader solutions than several of the top reader vendors combined. Did we not pay our RFID Journal dues :)?
