Are There Any Off-the-shelf Business Plans for Using RFID Within a Manufacturing Firm?

If not, why?

There are no off-the-shelf business plans for using RFID within a manufacturing firm, since each firm's business processes and facility are different. Some manufacturers need to track work-in-process, while others wish to monitor tools and returnable transport items, and still others must keep tabs on finished goods inventory. Very few try to do all three of these at once.

If you are just starting out, I would recommend that you think about the greatest challenges you face, or what goals you have for a radio frequency identification system. You can then begin to develop a plan for which type of system to implement, estimate the return on investment (ROI) and conduct a pilot to determine if RFID will, in fact, deliver the expected benefits.

I also encourage companies to consider future applications, so that they can develop an RFID system that will meet their long-term needs. The last thing you want is to deploy a system and then realize it will only work for one application and not others.
