Can I Use RFID as an Anti-collision System for Forklifts and Overhead Cranes Within a Warehouse?
If so, can you please provide some advice regarding which type of RFID technology we should deploy?
Yes, you can employ radio frequency identification to prevent collisions in your warehouse. A few years ago, we wrote about Byrnecut Mining, a contractor based in Western Australia that needed a way to prevent vehicular collisions at the Telfer gold mine. The company deployed an active RFID system provided by RFID Inc. (see Australian Mining Contractor Prevents Vehicular Collisions). A similar solution could be implemented within a warehouse.
There are a variety of active RFID solutions that might do the job. Ultra-wideband (UWB) RFID systems provide very precise location data, so that might be a good choice. Wi-fi based real-time location system (RTLS) technology might work just as well, but you would need to install access points to achieve the level of precision required. If you need to track vehicles in three dimensions (since you mentioned overhead cranes), you might look at a system like Mojix's phased array antenna technology, which utilizes passive UHF tags (see Mojix Takes Passive UHF RFID to a New Level).
