How Can I Use RFID to Identify Freight?

Posted By RFID Journal, 03.27.2013

I am looking for a radio frequency identification solution that can pinpoint a box for a freight application. Our constraints: It would be used both indoors and outdoors, the holder would be moving at a low speed, detection range would be up to 1 meter (3.3. feet), and there would be no obstacle between the reader and the tag. Which manufacturers should I contact, and what price can I expect to pay?

If I understand the use case correctly, the box will be reusable. In that case, I would contact such companies as Omni-ID, William Frick & Co., Xerafy and Xtreme RFID, which produce durable tags.

If the boxes being tracked are not reusable, however, then you would want to talk to label manufacturers, such as Avery Dennison, Invengo, Laxcen, Tageos and Zebra Technologies.

The cost would depend on whether you utilized ruggedized tags or labels, as well as on the volume. Labels can be purchased at 20 cents apiece in reasonably high volumes, while hard tags can cost several dollars or more each, depending on how durable they need to be.

Inteligistics offers a unique portable wireless solution that reads UHF passive tags at the item, case, or pallet level.
