Can I Use RFID to Protect Personal Items in My Home, Such as Guns and Paintings?

I hope you will be able to direct me to a reputable source if indeed such an application is feasible. I envision it as being either a proximity alarm trigger or an asset-tracking mechanism. Thanks in advance for any assistance you might be able to render.

A company known as iAutomate sells active radio frequency identification solution for use within the home. These systems feature active tags designed for monitoring movements, which have batteries and can broadcast over a longer distance than passive tags. They are also more expensive, however. iAutomate's RF-Watch RFID software might enable you to place active tags on your assets and have an alarm sound in the event that something moved that wasn't supposed to, such as a painting or a weapon.

You could also cobble together a tag and reader system that would sound an alarm if a tag were removed from a read field. Sparkfun Electronics sells a variety of high-frequency (HF) readers and other components. This would allow you to install a reader in the wall behind a painting, and hook it up to some kind of an alarm system that would sound if the tagged artwork was no longer detected by the interrogator.

Wiring a system for a wide variety of assets around your house, however, would not be an easy task.
