RFID Journal LIVE! on PBS

By Mark Roberti

Last year, when we held RFID Journal LIVE! 2007 in Orlando, Maryland Public Television (MPTV)—an affiliate of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)—sent a camera crew to shoot footage of the event to be included as part of an episode for a new documentary series entitled The Transformation Age.

At the time, I was a bit nervous, as most TV producers tend to look at radio frequency identification as something they can portray as a Big Brother technology. Ultimately, however, we agreed to let the producer and a film crew in.

The episode, now available online, was called "Lesson 4: Revolutionary New Technologies." I was interviewed extensively for the production, but somehow all of those great scenes ended up on the cutting room floor.

No matter, though. MPTV has put together a terrific piece that not only highlights RFID Journal LIVE! as the center of the RFID industry, but, more importantly, portrays RFID as what it is: a new technology that is delivering benefits to businesses and consumers in novel ways.

I encourage you all to take a look, because it's a rare example of the media not distorting RFID technology into something it isn't.
