April 28, 2009—This RFID Journal LIVE! exhibition and conference is being held this week in Orlando. The annual event generates many product, partnership and customer announcements, which are highlighted in RFID Update's coverage starting tonight, with more to follow in tomorrow's edition. Editor Will Smith is on site at the show and will provide a wrap-up with his observations next week.
- UPM Raflatac promoted several developments, including an item-level tagging system for validating tagged items inside packaging that it developed with Impinj and Zebra and the previously announced retail shelf management system it co-developed with Seeonic and Alliance. See the announcement here. UPM Raflatac also said it would release its new MiFARE Plus line of high frequency inlays with added security in July.
- Mojix announced Mojix Insight, an RTLS software application for its long-range passive UHF technology. The software was developed for warehouse, yard and corporate environments and can integrate with a variety of industrial automation systems and software applications used there. The company also announced a development partnership with InSync Software to support Mojix technology in InSync's application development platform, and a distribution partnership with SRA International. - EPCglobal US, the not-for-profit RFID standards body, said it will now offer advisory services to help organizations adopt EPC-based systems. The organization also announced a new pricing structure for the subscription fees organizations pay to receive EPC numbers. See the announcement here.
- A new RTLS tag from Ekahau and NavSync can be tracked by wireless LAN and by satellite to provide complete comprehensive location monitoring. NavSync provides GPS receivers that are integrated into Ekahau's WiFi RTLS tags and software environment. See the announcement here.
- GE Global Research teamed with SandLinks, the Israeli startup whose products combine reader functionality into RFID tags (see SandLinks Announces Combo Tag-Reader RTLS Chips) to develop an asset visibility solution for tracking trailers, trucks, rail cars, fleet vehicles and other transit assets. The system combines GPS tracking from the GE Asset Intelligence VeriWise solution with SandLinks' UWB RTLS sensing and tracking system to provide in-transit visibility.
- Time Domain said its PLUS ultra-wideband (UWB) RTLS sensor platform will be available for worldwide deployment starting in August. The company has received numerous wireless and safety certifications and plans to initially offer the PLUS system to 40 European Union countries plus Korea. See the announcement here.
- RFID Global Solution released Visi-Trac, a software platform product that supports input from multiple auto ID and sensor technologies including GPS, bar code, plus active and passive RFID technologies. The software was developed to provide visibility in a variety of environments. See the announcement here.
- Alien Technology, Bechtel Jacobs, an environmental contractor to the US government, and GlobeRanger collaborated to create a waste management system to identify vehicles and track materials at environmental clean-up sites. Vehicles are identified at multiple checkpoints to create a record of hazardous material transport and storage. Alien also announced the new ARCA application development kit for channel partners. - Intermec and Infratab partnered to create an RFID-based system to track perishable goods. Intermec mobile computers and UHF RFID readers now support Infratab's Freshtime semi-passive, temperature-sensing tags that are used to monitor produce, pharmaceuticals and other perishables.
