UK Police-issued NFC Devices Help Safeguard People Living with Dementia
Wednesday, May 18, 2022: 4:00 PM – 4:40 PM
Around 40,000 people with dementia go missing for the first time every year in the United Kingdom. The UK’s Avon and Somerset Police Force is helping families and the wider community locate missing people who are living with dementia, or who may require assistance while out in the community. The police force’s Dementia Safeguarding Scheme allocates free NFC-enabled devices that are distributed to members of the community through an on-line application on the force website. This application includes registration for the Herbert Protocol which records vital information such as places frequented, former addresses, photographs of the wearer and can assist officers when searching for a missing person. The force also provides a limited number of GPS trackers to those people living with dementia who are at high risk of becoming a missing person. Learn how Avon and Somerset Police are providing people living with dementia free NFC devices, each device contains basic information about the wearer along with a contact name and number for their relative/carer, who can be contacted if the wearer requires assistance.
Speaker: Sgt. Stuart King, Sargeant, Avon and Somerset Police
