September 16, 2005—A new RFID startup was announced earlier this month. Called Confidex, the company is located in Nokia, Finland, and will specialize in providing solutions for tag design, engineering, and production. According to the press release, Confidex offers "a unique capability in the industry to design and ramp-up RFID manufacturing and converting operations, whether based on using direct IC attachment, straps or inlays." The company, which was formally established last month, will offer production around both EPCglobal and ISO standards.

Two things are striking about Confidex. The first is its management. CEO Timo Lindström was president of Finnish tag manufacturer UPM Rafsec, widely considered one of the top five tag-makers. Second is the company's business model. It will essentially offer companies in the packaging and printing industries the ability to design and produce their owns customized RFID tags. Tag customizations like enhanced performance and robust physical protection will be on offer.
