January 26, 2005—According to a report entitled "RFID Opportunities: Market & Technologies in Western Europe" released Wednesday from the UK's Juniper Research, the Western European RFID market is set to hit $1.1 billion by 2007. Germany and the UK will lead the drive, together generating 40% of the total market. (This comes as no surprise, given that two of the most ambitious European RFID initiatives -- those of Tesco and METRO Group -- belong to the UK and Germany, respectively.) The Netherlands, Denmark, and Switzerland will be the second most active players. The report also confirms the significance to Europe of the recent GEN 2 ratification, saying it "is key to developing the market beyond today’s limited trials."
