December 3, 2004—Consumer packaged goods giant Gillette is ready for Wal-Mart's RFID compliance deadline of January 1, 2005. This won't come as a surprise to those following the industry, as the razor-maker has long been a leader in RFID adoption. Its executives are often featured as speakers at industry events, and it was the news of Gillette's 500 million RFID tag purchase from Alien Technology back in January of 2003 that introduced RFID to the IT masses. The company's belief in the technology's promise has been steadfast and rests on a very simple principle articulated by spokesman Paul Fox: "We want our products to be on the retail shelf when and where the consumer wants to buy them." While the company cannot justify item-level tagging until RFID tags cost "fractions of a cent," which Fox predicts is more than a decade away, case-tagging represents an enormous supply chain improvement which will reap substantial gains in the meantime.
