August 16, 2004—RFID was one of the major topics covered at the American Library Association's annual conference held this year in Orlando. Many important national and academic libraries around the world have recently announced RFID implementations, and the trend will surely continue. Conference attendees cited numerous advantages to RFID library installations, including better asset management, self-service opportunities, and freeing staff time for more valuable tasks. While privacy questions were also raised, it was noted that the Book Industry Study Group has drafted an RFID privacy policy for libraries to consider.
