August 11, 2004—Wal-Mart is considered as much as a year ahead of its competitors in terms of RFID adoption, but its closest followers, including Target, may be just where they want to be. Letting Wal-Mart spend the money on the trailblazing and first-mover mistakes could clear the way for competing retailers to implement RFID more cheaply and easily.
