August 3, 2004—RFID will ultimately enable what Meta Group's VP of Technology Research Services, Gene Alvarez, calls "The Adaptive Organization." Such an organization has accurate, real-time access to information about what's going on at its perimeter, allowing it to respond quickly and decisively to the slightest changes in market conditions. While RFID won't cause such adaptability overnight, the promise is there, and decision makers should be patient by remembering that RFID technology, like the bar code, will take some time to reach its full potential.
