July 7, 2004—While it is Wal-Mart's mandate that receives the most press, ultimately it will be the US Department of Defense's RFID initiative that is the most complex. Unlike Wal-Mart, the DOD often uses "little guy" suppliers for whom RFID might be prohibitively expensive. Also unlike Wal-Mart, the DOD is a strictly segmented organization, and the technological capabilites of its many warehouses vary widely.
