RFID-enabled license plates to identify UK vehicles

June 10, 2004—There is a new type of automobile license plate under consideration in the UK. Dubbed "e-Plate", the device includes an embedded RFID tag encoded with an encrypted identification number that authorities will be able to cross-reference with other information, including vehicle and owner details.
