June 7, 2004—This article provides a brief and fascinating look at the process by which Charles Walton developed, enhanced, and patented the standard RFID design in use today. Unfortunately for Walton, his patent has expired, so he will not earn royalties from the upcoming pervasiveness of the technology he fathered.
