Dec. 12, 2011—A growing number of U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) suppliers are being asked to tag goods with radio frequency identification prior to shipping them to the agency, in order to better manage supply chains. These suppliers, as well as businesses focused on supply chain security, have been exploring active and passive RFID technologies to improve supply chain visibility (see Targeted Attack).

RFID in Defense and Security 2011—RFID Journal's second annual conference and exhibition covering those sectors, held on Nov. 17, 2011, in Arlington, Va.—focused on how the DOD employs RFID, how it benefits from using the technology and how suppliers are affected by having to tag merchandise. Approximately 100 visitors attended this year's event, as presenters explored the ways in which suppliers can benefit from utilizing RFID internally to lower costs, improve security and expedite payments from the military.



Speakers discussed new applications for RFID in security and defense, the benefits these applications deliver and how to overcome implementation challenges. Providers of RFID hardware, software and services for the defense and aerospace sectors demonstrated their latest solutions, and attendees had the opportunity to experience innovative RFID products and find solutions to meet their particular needs.
