As a boy growing up in India, Sanjay Sarma was fascinated by robots and enjoyed taking apart old appliances and electronic gadgets. It wasn't just child's play. His imagination, curiosity and innate aptitude for all things mechanical led to a bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1989, a master's in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Melon University in 1992 and a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1995.
It was at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he became an associate professor of mechanical engineering in 1996, that Sarma made his mark. His colleague David Brock hit on the idea of putting low-cost RFID tags on physical objects and linking them to computer networks. Brock was working on software simulation tools and wanted a way to integrate real-world information into the simulations.
