RFID Journal LIVE! Europe 2008 Report

At this month's RFID Journal LIVE! Europe conference, held in Prague, 300 industry professionals learned from organizations currently using RFID to improve their operations. View the presentations from the event.

Nov. 24, 2008—Companies across Europe are employing radio frequency identification to improve their manufacturing, supply chain and retail operations. At RFID Journal LIVE! Europe 2008, collocated with GS1 in Europe's EPC Europe Conference, several such firms showcased real-world end-user applications to educate attendees regarding how they can utilize RFID technologies to reduce costs and increase sales.

More than 300 individuals attended this year's LIVE! Europe event, held on Nov. 4-6 at the Clarion Congress Hotel in Prague, Czech Republic. Speakers from numerous leading end-user companies discussed new applications for RFID, as well as how to overcome implementation challenges, and how to leverage the technology to deliver business benefits. Speaker presentations are now available—see the final page for downloading instructions.

Preconferences
The event opened with a pair of preconference seminars designed to provide in-depth information regarding RFID technologies. RFID Journal University—presented by RFID Journal editor Mark Roberti and Pankaj Sood, founder and manager of the McMaster RFID Applications Lab—provided those new to RFID with the foundational knowledge necessary to understand how radio frequency identification can be applied to solve specific business problems. Attendees learned about the physics behind RFID, legislation and standardization issues, real-world considerations, how to build an RFID business case, and how to build on the technology with the EPC Network.

Roberti also offered a presentation on RFID basics, designed to provide preconference attendees with the foundational knowledge of radio frequency identification necessary to engage vendors and develop a business case. Roberti explained the differences between various classes of tags, including active and passive systems, as well as the need for additional IT systems to build upon RFID in real-world applications. In addition, this session provided a brief overview of the EPCglobal Network, the future of ISO standards, ETSI reader regulations, the latest standardization efforts worldwide, and the relationship between various standards in the area of RFID and Electronic Product Code (EPC) technologies, including the latest EPC Gen 2 standard.
