Preconferences
The conference opened with three preconference seminars providing in-depth information on specific aspects of RFID and Electronic Product Code (EPC) technologies:
• RFID Journal University offered attendees a basic introduction to the fundamentals of RFID, including an understanding of RFID hardware and a live demonstration, as well as the latest developments and practical issues. Topics included the differences between the various classes of tags, such as active and passive systems; when additional IT systems are required to build upon RFID in real-world applications; the EPCglobal Network; the future of ISO standards; ETSI reader regulations and the latest standardization efforts worldwide; the relationship between different standards in the area of RFID and EPC; and industry buzz words.

• RFID 's Role in Improving Hospital Operations explained how hospitals are using RFID to monitor patients and track surgical sponges, scalpels and high-value assets to reduce medical errors and potential law suits. This seminar also explored how to use RFID to set up automated maintenance routines to improve operational efficiencies and explain how different RFID systems can be used today to reduce costs and achieve improved patient outcomes.
