Is It Possible to Track Cattle Over Long Distances?

I would like to track the specific locations of livestock over a 1-square-mile area, in a live and direct fashion, with a battery life of at least 12 to 24 hours. What type of RFID tag should I use?

Most active RFID tags have a read range of from 300 feet (91 meters) to 1,500 feet (460 meters). It is possible to use repeaters to extend read range, but I am unaware of any RFID system that can locate an object within a 1-square-mile area without a large number of interrogators being installed around and within a site's perimeter. Perhaps our readers might be able to suggest a viable solution.
