AWID Moves Into New Markets
RFID component supplier Applied Wireless Identification Group (AWID) announced that Advanced ID has ordered 32,000 AWID readers. Advanced ID, a Canadian company based in Calgary, Alberta, will use the readers in a project that will, upon completion, track the entire hog industry in Taiwan from farm to slaughterhouse.

WhereNet, a real-time locating system (RTLS) provider, has released two new messaging applications for automotive plants. The applications, Process Control Messaging and Machine Messaging, leverage existing WhereNet RFID antennas and wireless infrastructure to allow plants to automate parts replenishment, problem identification, status monitoring and workforce communications.

Axcess Opens Doors in Europe
Axcess, a Dallas-area company that offers security and asset-tracking systems, has won CE (Conformité Européenne) approval for the bulk of its radio frequency identification offerings, allowing the company to expand sales into the European market.

The DOD Spells Out Its RFID Plans
Last week, the U.S. Department of Defense held a meeting with some 200 suppliers to begin clarifying its plans for using RFID to track everything from missiles to boots and to solicit feedback on its initial plan, outlined in October, from suppliers and RFID vendors. The meeting was attended by representatives from a cross section of the military's supply base, which includes large weapons makers, pharmaceutical companies, consumer goods manufacturers, and large and small companies from many other sectors.
