California Holds New RFID Hearing
California State Senator Debra Bowen (D-Redondo Beach), chair of the state legislature's Joint Committee on Preparing California for the 21st Century, held a follow-up last week to her Aug. 18 informational hearing on the potential privacy concerns posed by the implementation of RFID technology. Bowen told RFID Journal that consumers have no real legal protection against loss of privacy through the use of RFID technology.

RTLS Drives Efficiencies at BMW
BMW Group has installed Siemens' real-time location system at its manufacturing plant in Dingolfing, Germany. The RTLS, which uses technology from WhereNet, lets BMW workers instantly locate and track any vehicle as it comes off the assembly line or is moved to one of 3,000 parking spaces on the factory premises.

IP Forms RFID Alliance
As part of a nonexclusive strategic alliance, International Paper and systems integration and consulting services company ESYNC will jointly market and deliver a variety of RFID consulting and integration services focused on the Electronic Product Code and related technologies. The union will bring together IP's own RFID-deployment experience and ESYNC's supply chain consulting skills.

Inside Contactless, a French company that makes RFID smart cards, has delivered a total of 10 million of Inside's PicoTag smart labels and microchips to China's Ministry of Education. Chinese universities and colleges across a number of provinces have applied the smart labels to their students' ID cards.
