U.S. Military to Issue RFID Mandate
Exclusive: RFID Journal has learned that the U.S. Department of Defense plans to ask its top 100 suppliers to put RFID tags on pallets, cases and big-ticket items. The military intends to spell out its plans in detail sometime next summer, but sources say that tagging could begin in 2005.

New High-Speed RFID Tag Machine
Matrics, a Columbia, M.D.-based RFID systems provider, announced at this week's EPC Symposium a new high-speed RFID tag assembly machine that, when fully operational, could produce up to 70 billion RFID tags per year. The company says that the new machine makes it possible to produce tags for five cents in very high volumes.

TI to Make UHF EPC Tags
Texas Instruments, one of the world's largest manufacturers of 13.56 MHz RFID transponders, has announced that it is entering the market for UHF chips. The company will make tags based on the Electronic Product Code specification, once an EPC standard is established. It will also make RFID transponders that are compliant with ISO 18000-6A and 18000-6B, two emerging international standards for UHF tags.

Agile RFID Reader Patent Awarded
SAMSys Technologies, a Toronto-based company that makes RFID readers, has been granted a U.S. patent for a "System for Multi-Standard RFID Tags." Cliff Horwitz, chairman and CEO of SAMSys, says the patent includes several claims that generally cover the concept and architecture for multi-frequency, multi-protocol readers.

EAN and UCC Form EPCglobal, Inc.
EAN International and the Uniform Code Council have formerly announced that they have changed the name of their joint venture from AutoID Inc. to EPCglobal, Inc. The new name was adopted, after extensive research, to better reflect their organization's mission to foster global adoption of the EPC technology developed by the Auto-ID Center.

Rafsec Debuts Packaging RFID Tag
Rafsec, a subsidiary of Finland's UPM-Kymmene Corp., has unveiled an RFID tag with an antenna specifically designed for tagging paper packaging. The company has also introduced a UHF version of its in-mold transponder technology.

IBM has introduced an RFID service to help retailers and consumer packaged goods companies deploy RFID technology for advanced product tracking and inventory control. The company says it has the integration experience and well-established middleware applications to link RFID systems to existing enterprise software applications.

A Time for Leadership
The Uniform Code Council and EAN International have done the right thing in setting up a joint venture, EPCglobal, to promote EPC adoption (see "EAN and UCC Form EPCglobal, Inc."). Setting up a task force of end users to establish EPC as a standard with true interoperability is also a good move (see "Code Warriors: Driving EPC Forward"). It's now up to leading companies to join the task force and drive the process forward quickly.
