March 17, 2005—Whether or not you agree that tag price is the leading benchmark of RFID adoption, many in the industry continue to focus on this metric and how quickly (or not) it is declining. Take for example the "Low-Cost RFID IC Packaging and Assembly: Roadblock on the Highway to a 5-cent RFID Tag" workshop being hosted next week by TechSearch International in Austin, Texas. Presenters will hail from some of the most notable industry players, including Philips, Alien, Symbol, Texas Instruments, and Motorola. The keynote will be given by Sun Microsystems' Business Development Manager of Manufacturing, Rick Koskella, and Harvard Business School professor Gitanjali Swamy will give a talk on "The Cost Model for RFID." According to the brochure, "The purpose of the workshop is to provide a forum for experts on all aspects of RFID IC packaging and assembly to present their work. The workshop will create a networking opportunity for those concerned with the technology and economics of RFID tag assembly."
