February 4, 2005—SafeTzone Technologies, producer of the increasingly popular RFID locator systems installed at theme parks and ski resorts, has put an order in to Ontario, Canada-based RFID hardware maker SAMSys Technologies for 150 units of the company's 134 KHz MP9112 RFID reader. After 18 months experience using the MP9112 at its many installations, SafeTzone has been so satisfied with the performance that it has standardized around a custom version of the reader. The SafeTzone version includes a read range of 8 inches (more than twice the standard 1 to 3 inches), and the power supply has been made a snap-in to reduce surprise disconnects.

SafeTzone has been regularly announcing additions to its list of client venues for the 12 months that RFID Update has been following it. Notable clients include Steamboat Ski and Resort in Colorado, Wannado City in Florida, and Paramount's Great America in California. But SafeTzone isn't the only kid on the block; Denmark's KidSpotter and AeroScout of Silicon Valley were awarded the contract last year to install a similar high-profile system at LEGOLAND Denmark.

While supply chain visibility is, and will continue to be, the most watched area of RFID development, companies such as SafeTzone demonstrate lesser-known but compelling innovations based around RFID. Perhaps SAMSys' own CEO Cliff Horwitz says it best: "RFID is virtually synonymous today with supply chain initiatives, but SafeTzone's system demonstrates the kinds of creative applications beyond product tracking that can be enabled by the technology."
