Animal Tracking System to Use RFID

South Dakota's projected cattle identification system will use RFID to track the birth, history, and movement of all tagged animals.

August 17, 2004—Some of the $11 million in grants that South Dakota is slated to receive from the federal government will go to an RFID-based cattle tracking system. The project would require using RFID tags to track each animal, allowing its history to be recorded and accessed later. Last December's mad cow disease scare has accelerated cattle tracking initiatives, and RFID is widely considered the best technology for the job.
