The EPC Network Gets Real
The Auto-ID Center developed the EPC Network to link serial numbers to product information stored in a database, but no companies had stepped up to build out the network. Now, VeriSign, a company that provides digital security and network infrastructure, is introducing three new services aimed at enabling companies to use the EPC Network to share data with their trading partners.

Hitachi Unveils Integrated RFID Tag
Japanese semiconductor giant Hitachi has unveiled a prototype of its tiny RFID µ-chip, or mu-chip, which features an antenna built onto the microchip. The new tag is so small that the company believes it can be embedded in paper and used to authenticate banknotes and valuable paper documents. It will cost about 25 to 30 U.S. cents, about half as much as the current mu-chip.

Active RFID Labels for the Masses
Smart label specialist KSW-Microtec plans to mass-produce thin film batteries using a roll-to-roll manufacturing process. The battery technology has been licensed from Power Paper, an Israeli company, and will be used to power active RFID labels that have a longer read range and support special features, such as integrated sensors.

New RFID Tire Sensor for Trucks
After five years in development with tire company Bridgestone, Crosslink, a Boulder, Colo., company that offers a range of wireless data products for transportation applications, has announced an RFID tire-monitoring system for commercial truck fleets. The company believes this is potentially a multi-million dollar market.

This summer, Nicholas G. Carr, Harvard Business Review's editor at large, started a raging debate in IT circles with an article entitled "IT Doesn't Matter." He compared information technology to electricity, railroads and the internal combustion engine, which became part of the business landscape and then stopped providing a competitive advantage. IT innovation may have paused for a moment, but RFID will ignite a whole new wave of change, which will provide a competitive edge for those who exploit it.
