Matrics Gets $20 Million in Funding
Matrics announced that it has received $20 million in new funding. The Columbia, Md.-based RFID systems provider says it will use the money, part of a third round of financing, to expand into Europe and Asia and to bring a new high-speed antenna-attachment system to market.

Airline Interest in RFID on the Rise
The US Transportation Security Administration estimates that the airline industry in the United States will have to spend about $5 billion over the next five to 10 years to upgrade baggage screening systems to comply with laws passed after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Airlines see RFID as one technology that can help them comply with the new regulations, but they aren't ready to commit just yet to deploying the technology.

ABI: RFID Market Poised for Growth
Allied Business Intelligence, a research firm based in Syosset, NY, projects the global RFID market to grow to more than $3.1 billion by 2008, from about $1.3 billion this year. Industries that will drive spending include consumer packaged goods and retail, automotive, military and homeland defense.

RedPrairie Debuts RFID App Module
Logistics systems specialist RedPrairie has introduced the RFID Accelerator, a software module that lets companies running its DLx Warehouse product, as well as other packaged or legacy software, to add RFID capabilities to their systems. The module uses software agents to collect and verify RFID tag information, retrieve related inventory data and pass this combined information to retail customers in advance shipping notices.

AmEx Expands RFID Payment Trial
American Express says it will extend a test of its ExpressPay RFID payment product to 4,000 users -- mostly AmEx employees -- and 175 merchants in the Phoenix area. The credit card company is also looking to expand the number of participants to upwards of 30,000 over the course of the six-month trial. Initial results of past trials have revealed customer spending increased by 20 to 30 percent when the key fob was used, and the transaction time was cut by 20 to 40 percent.
