The Auto-ID Center has created an online calculator designed to help companies determine whether deploying EPC technology will pay off. The easy-to-use online tool lets you enter your own prices for tags and readers, as well as specific information about your own operations. It can help companies determine which variables are most important when planning an implementation.

Sony, Philips to Test RFID Platform
Philips has developed a new software platform called Web Link, which will enable online service providers to authenticate users of many consumer devices through RFID smart cards. Along with Sony, Philips will soon begin field testing the system in Europe and North America. It could usher in a new error of interactivity.

RFID Enables "Physical Browsing"
Most of the focus of RFID research has been on business applications. Heikki Seppä, research director at the state-run VTT Technical Research Center of Finland, says that more work needs to be done on consumer applications. He wants to develop readers for cell phones so that consumers can scan tags anywhere. He calls this "physical browsing."

Team Demos RFID/Bar Code Reader
Checkpoint Systems recently demonstrated a bar-code scanner that can also read Electronic Product Code tags, as well as a smart shelf that can deliver video, shrink and shelf inventory visibility to a store manager's wireless PDA in real time.

Thin-Film Battery for RFID Sensors
Infinite Power Solutions of Golden, Colorado, has begun a pilot production line that can turn out up to one million rechargeable thin-film batteries per year. The small, flexible batteries, which can be less than 5 millimeters thick, put out four volts and have a capacity of about 200 micro-amp hours per square centimeter (.4 inch). Two potential markets are smart active labels and RFID sensors.
