Merloni Unveils RFID Smart Appliances
There's been a lot of talk about smart appliances and a few have even been introduced. But Italian appliance maker Merloni Elettrodomestici is the first manufacturer to bet big on RFID. At a press conference in Venice, Italy, on April 4, the company unveiled a new line of Ariston appliances that have RFID readers that enable the machines to communicate with objects.

1-Cent RFID Tags for Supermarkets
Inkode, a Vienna, Virginia, company that has the license for a chipless RFID technology, is working with partners to develop applications for protecting high-value items in supermarkets, such as meats. The company says its tags can be mass-produced for less than a penny.

Radio frequency identification has helped Figleaves, a UK-based Web site that sells intimate apparel, do it successfully. Port Turns to RFID for Security
The Port of Houston Authority is turning to radio frequency identification to reduce the possibility that terrorists could exploit its facilities to get weapons of mass destruction into the United States. The port has joined the Smart and Secure Tradelanes initiative, which uses an RFID system originally developed by Savi Technology for the US Department of Defense.

Fractal Antenna Systems, a company that specializes in fractal technology, has opened its RFID antenna/tag design facilities to other RFID developers and manufacturers.
