Two of the world's top smart card makers this week announced sweeping layoffs amid continued weakness in the sector. Gemplus will eliminate 1,000 positions and Schlumberger will shed 3,300 employees.

Woolworths, the U.K. retailer, has launched an ambitious pilot program that uses RFID and other technologies to provide detailed information on precisely where products are at any moment in time. The system is expected to cut supply chain shrinkage, reduce misdirected shipments and improve product availability.
