Philips Unveils Low-Cost Chip Plans
At the Auto-ID Center’s board meeting in Cambridge, Mass., last week, Philips Semiconductor, one of the world’s largest chipmakers, laid out a road map for producing hundreds of millions and eventually billions of low-cost chips that can be used in RFID labels and smart packaging.

STMicro Teams Up with Alien
STMicroelectronics, the world’s third largest semiconductor company, has signed a letter of intent to form a strategic partnership with Alien Technology, a startup based in Morgan Hill, Calif. The deal creates another source of low-cost chips for Auto-ID Center-compliant RFID tags.

SAMSys Eyes Smart Shelf Market
RFID reader maker SAMSys Technologies is looking to establish itself as a leader in the nascent market for smart shelves. The company has signed a reseller agreement with LG&P In-Store, which designs merchandising displays and marketing programs. More deals are in the works.

Zebra and PDC Target Healthcare
Zebra Technologies, the barcode printing equipment provider, has teamed with Precision Dynamics Corp. to offer a printer that can produce patient wristbands with RFID tags. The technology, when used with software applications, could prevent life-threatening mistakes in hospitals.
