EU Retailers To Track At Item-Level
Several major European apparel and footwear retailers are planning to purchase upwards of 3 billion RFID tags for implementations that will begin next year, according to Peter Abell, director of research for AMR Research’s retail practice. The companies will track individual items in an effort to boost sales, cut costs and gain a competitive edge.

CD Tracking Project Deemed A Hit
e.center, a U.K. e-business and supply chain standards association, has concluded the live phase of its CD.id project, in which individual music CDs were tracked through the supply chain. The final results and recommendations won’t be released until next spring, but all indications are that the project was a success.

Datacard Group, a leading provider of systems for producing and managing credit and identification cards, and Identix, the largest biometrics company in the United States, are teaming up to promote and sell fingerprint identification technology to government agencies, banks and corporations.

Auto-ID Center Ponders Patent Pool
A pool could reduce the risk of lawsuits slowing the adoption of its RFID system. There seems to be little risk for patent holders, but it’s not clear whether the industry will go along.

OP-ED: Patently Obvious
The Auto-ID Center is considering creating a patent pool to reduce the risk of lawsuits derailing its technology. Patent holders must realize that it is better to compete head-to-head in a $100 billion market than to hold the patent on a technology for which there is no market.
