Psion Teklogix Announces Handheld for Deep Freeze
Psion Teklogix, a provider of mobile data collection solutions, says it has added its RD7950 UHF interrogator to its 7530 handheld computer and bar-code scanner. Designed for use in rugged environments and in extreme temperatures, the RFID-enabled 7530 reads EPC UHF Gen 2 and Gen 1 Class 1, 0+ and 0 tags; as well as ISO 18000-6b and EM Micro tags. The device can operate at temperatures between 32 degrees and 122 degrees Fahrenheit (zero to 50 degrees Celsius). Its components are designed to resist condensation damage, optimizing it for use in freezer environments where the device is likely to be brought into and out of cold temperatures regularly. The 7530 computer has a 32-bit microprocessor, 4 megabytes of flash memory and 8 MB of RAM. It will be available in May 2006 through Psion Teklogix' sales offices, distributors and value-added resellers across North America. A European version will be offered in July. The device costs $2,995.

ODIN Releases Gen 2 Interrogator Report
RFID systems integrator ODIN Technologies has released the Gen 2 RFID Reader Benchmark report, for which it analyzed seven UHF EPC Gen 2 RFID interrogators (readers). The report is designed to provide end users with insights into the various devices' performance levels and capabilities, based on testing ODIN performed in its lab. The report also offers criteria end users can use to evaluate their purchase options. The tests involved different scenarios, such as reading tagged goods moving through dock doors, along conveyors and at stretch-wrappers. The performance criteria included reading distance, power output, readability, performance degradation through interference and the interrogators' ability to operate in an environment shared by many other operating readers. The interrogators utilized in the benchmark study were Alien Technology's ALR 9800, Impinj's Speedway, Intermec's IF5, Omron's V740, Sirit's MP 9320 (previously from SAMSys), Symbol's XR400 and ThingMagic's Mercury4 interrogator. All of these readers are certified by EPCglobal for conformance to the EPC Gen 2 air-interface standard. The report is available on ODIN's Web site for $1,500.
