RFID in Aerospace/Defense 2021

December 07, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

The use of RFID in the aerospace and defense sectors can help organizations comply with customer requirements and achieve significant benefits internally. Case studies presented by aerospace and defense companies already using RFID will help attendees determine the best technology for their needs, learn best practices from early adopters, find the right technology partners and move forward with adoption.

From Space to Commercial Aviation: Applying Continuous Inventory Monitoring to Everyday Flights
Problems with keeping up with inventory aren’t limited to here on earth. The International Space Station (ISS) has been using RFID to help solve inventory issues in orbit for years, and there are many new orbital habitats planned. Here on earth, there are pressures to improve inventory accuracy on everyday flights with low touch/no touch as a key consideration for keeping passengers safe. Learn how we can apply some of the RFID uses in the space program to help enable new value for commercial aviation for both passengers and cargo, and how the future of air travel, air safety, and cargo tracking will change.
Speaker: Justin Patton, Director, RFID Center, Auburn University

Improving Asset Tracking and Management with an IoT-enabled RFID Solution
From tool tracking and supply chain management, discover how Boeing is helping Aerospace & Defense organizations achieve end-to-end visibility of assets and workflows with an Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled RFID solution. The award-winning Enterprise Sensor Integration (ESI) technology seamlessly integrates a myriad of sensors and business/hardware systems on a sensor-agnostic IoT platform – enabling users to track tagged assets anywhere in the world on a dynamic, map-centric interface.  Learn how ESI also automates labor-intensive functions such as tool management, work-in-progress, inventory management, chemical management, and much more. See how these commercial applications can help military organizations achieve their goal of total asset visibility.
About ESI:
* ESI is an award winning, sensor-agnostic solution that solves IoT connectivity challenges. It seamlessly integrates sensor technologies including RFID, GPS, and Mesh, BLE, Wi-Fi enabled sensors and more.
* ESI enables end-to-end visibility for assets, parts and supply chain operations. It automates processes such as tool management, distribution and bin management and invoicing.
* ESI creates ecosystems to support optimization and efficiencies by incorporating features for real-time alerts, mapping applications and environmental sensors.
Speaker: James Caldwell, Manager, Information Technology, Boeing Global Services

BAE Systems Improves Chemical Tracking with RFID
Global defense technology company BAE Systems has boosted its chemical tracking capability with a UHF RFID solution. The system moves beyond bar code and automates the capture of data, thereby providing real time awareness of shelf-life material. The firm learned from the previous success of RFID for assets and material, and is leveraging current infrastructure, while using that information to kick start the chemical tracking initiative.
Key takeaways:
* Hear the results of a pilot was performed in 2020.
* Learn how the system is being deployed into production environments and how it can be used across the enterprise.
Speaker: Philip Whiting, Operations Program Specialists, Sr., BAE Systems

Aviation RFID in Perspective – a Little Past and a Lot of Future
Aviation wasn’t the earliest adopter of RFID but we learned a lot from watching the other industries trying to make it work across their supply chains.  Knowing where around the world we need to fix airplanes, the system was designed that could work without being connected fulltime to a network and database – totally different than other industries. The aviation solution that everyone knows about is baggage tracking, but RFID does so much more in the maintenance sector to keep us safe, reduce our costs, and create a differentiator between airlines who do and don’t use RFID. Not much discussion of a theoretical strategy in this session – instead, we’ll discuss how to solve real world problems in maintaining aircraft, tooling, and more.
Speaker: Jon Andresen, President, Technology Solutions Consulting and author of the ATA standard
